I was born on Mississippi Lake with a hat on my head,
Had no one to love me, no one who really cared.
Early one morning I felt so down,
Being alone with no friends around.
I decided to jump from the first bridge I found,
A stranger saw me and told me “don’t drown,
You should go down to New Orleans to marry a good man,
The first one that you’ll see will soothe away your pain.”
He said to me “don’t go away,
Don’t jump in the river, I want you to stay.”
I told him “honey you don’t know my name,
Leave me in peace, I can’t live in hell.”
The first man I loved had nothing to say.
The second one really thought I was gonna pay !
I only remember the laugh on his face,
When he told me “darling we ain’t gonna last.”
So I went back to Mississippi Lake with a hat on my head,
There I spent months crying dying in my bed.
I met my last love while walking in the rain,
My life was a nightmare I wanted to end.
He said to me “don’t go away,
Don’t jump in the river I want you to stay.”
I told him “honey you don’t know my name,
Leave me in peace I can’t live in hell.”
He said to me “don’t go away,
Don’t jump in the river I need you to stay.”
He told me “baby I do know your name,
We’ll leave in peace if you give me your hand.”
